One night we found my almost 16 and 1/2 year old stuck in the bathroom and repeatedly making circles. We noticed she also lost some of her sight. We took her to the vet and they said it could be three things…long story short they told us it was doggy dementia and some days will be harder. I think a stroke is what triggered all of this. I'm writing this for my 4-pound toy Shih Tzu who has serious dementia and degenerative myopathy. He stopped eating. Just stares off into space. He's losing function of his back legs and it's heartbreaking to watch. He's only 9 and this is progressing at warp speed. While he's not in pain according to the vet, his eyes are empty and lifeless. I know we're losing him but I'm not willing to give up yet. If you're reading this, you're probably not either. I'm writing this review even though it's only been two days. I'm not sure if we see any improvement quite yet. I'll come back with an update in 6 weeks. God speed to all of you dealing with the impossibly heartbreaking, slow and painful loss of a beloved pet with dementia. I'd hug you all if I could.
Update: It's been six weeks and this has made a DRAMATIC difference. Kilo is eating again. The sparkle is back in his eyes. He's engaging and meets me at the door. He's even walking better and not falling as much. It's been nothing short of a miracle. We missed a couple days last week and there was a very noticeable change for the worse. Slept all day. Refused to eat. Staring into space. I'm just speechless and incredibly grateful for giving us more time together and for Kilo, a better quality of life.
Update Feb. 9th: We did end up losing Kilo at the end of January. Ultimately, he just stopped eating and drinking altogether. He died at home in my arms. He was not suffering but his little brain just ran out of steam. I wanted to thank the bark labs for creating this powerful product. It gave us 5 more quality months we never would have had without it. I wish I had known about it sooner. Neurological disease is insidious. These literally SAVED the life of our geriatric dachshund. He's around 17 years old and was showing severe signs of dementia.
